Den 1954-1955 NHL sesongen var den 38. sesongen av National Hockey League . De Detroit Red Wings var Stanley Cup-mesterne da de beseiret de Montreal Canadiens fire kamper for å tre i best-av-syv siste serien. Canadiensene var uten stjernespiss Maurice 'Rocket' Richard, som hadde blitt suspendert for sluttspillet, en suspensjon som førte til " Richard Riot " i Montreal den 17. mars 1955 .
Liga virksomhet
Art Ross kunngjorde på ligahøvdingsmøtet at forbindelsen hans med Boston ville avsluttes i slutten av september. Ettersom dette ville være hans siste opptreden på et ligamøte, benyttet han anledningen til å takke guvernørene og andre som var tilknyttet ligaen i løpet av de 30 årene han var offiser i Boston-klubben for den vennligheten, høfligheten og samarbeidet han hadde mottatt, og utvidet sine gode ønsker for fortsatt suksess i ligaen. Conn Smythe og Frank Selke uttrykte gode ønsker til alle tilstedeværende til Ross ved pensjonen.
Før sesongen forlot Red Wings-hovedtrener Tommy Ivan Detroit for å bli daglig leder for Chicago Black Hawks , og Jimmy Skinner erstattet ham bak benken i Motor City. En av de første tingene Ivan gjorde i Chicago var å etablere et omfattende gårdsanlegg, noe Black Hawks aldri hadde.
Vanlig sesong
18. desember 1954 scoret Maurice Richard sitt 400. karrieremål mot Chicago netminder Al Rollins i en 4–1 Canadiens-seier over Black Hawks. Montreal og Toronto spilte med 1–1 uavgjort 29. desember i Maple Leaf Gardens . Maurice Richard fikk stående applaus da han scoret sitt 401. mål sent i første periode.
I et poengløs slips på Montreal Forum 10. mars ble en ny isrens og resurfacer kalt Zamboni brukt for første gang. Fansen var ikke takknemlig for Torontos defensive stil i dette spillet og kastet søppel, inkludert griseføtter, på isen.
Den Richard Riot fant sted 17. mars 1955. Maurice Richard hadde blitt suspendert av ligaen president Clarence Campbell etter en hendelse i en kamp mot Boston hvor Richard slo dommeren. Richard ble suspendert resten av sesongen og sluttspillet. Campbells påfølgende opptreden på et Canadiens-spill på Montreal Forum oppmuntret en gruppe demonstranter og førte til vold i Forum og i sentrum av Montreal.
