I følge APG II er Asclepiadaceae , kjent som milkweed -familien , en tidligere plantefamilie som nå behandles som en underfamilie (underfamilien Asclepiadoideae ) i Apocynaceae (Bruyns 2000).
De danner en gruppe flerårige urter , twining busker , lianer eller sjelden trær, men inneholder også et betydelig antall bladløse stammesukkulenter . Navnet kommer av typen slekten Asclepias (milkweeds).
Det er 348 slekter , med omtrent 2900 arter . De er hovedsakelig lokalisert i tropene til subtropene, spesielt i Afrika og Sør -Amerika.
Den blomsteravanserte stammen Stapelieae i denne familien inneholder de relativt kjente stamme saftige slektene som Huernia , Stapelia og Hoodia . De er bemerkelsesverdige for de komplekse mekanismene de har utviklet for pollinering, som uavhengig parallelt med de ikke -relaterte Orchidaceae , spesielt i gruppering av pollen i pollinia . Duften fra blomstene, ofte kalt "carrion", tiltrekker seg fluer. Fluene pollinerer blomstene.
Mange nye hybrider har blitt dannet på grunn av blomsters unike befruktningsmetode.
